What Happens to Your Belly Button During a Tummy Tuck?

One common question about tummy tuck surgery is surprisingly specific: “Will I get a new belly button?” Usually, no. During a full tummy tuck, your existing navel stays in place while the skin around it is tightened and repositioned. At Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery in Lone Tree, Colorado, board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeons Christopher G. Williams, MD and Jeremy Z. Williams, MD completed plastic surgery residency training at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and plan tummy tuck surgery around each patient’s anatomy.

Why Does a Full Tummy Tuck Affect the Belly Button?

A full abdominoplasty treats loose tissue above and below the navel. After excess skin is removed, the remaining tissue is pulled downward to create a smoother contour. Because the surface around your navel has moved, our surgeons make an opening in the repositioned skin so your existing belly button can come through in the right place.

The belly button itself is not replaced. What changes is the surrounding skin and the opening through which the navel is visible.

Does a Mini Tummy Tuck Change the Belly Button?

Usually not. A mini tummy tuck concentrates on loose tissue and fullness below the navel, so repositioning the belly button is not part of the procedure.

If laxity extends higher on the abdomen, a mini procedure may not correct enough of the problem. Our guide to mini vs. full tummy tuck surgery explains how the treatment area, scar length, and degree of correction differ between the two approaches.

What Will Your Belly Button Look Like After Surgery?

Early swelling and tightness can make the navel look different during the first stage of healing. That appearance is not the final result. As swelling decreases and the tissues settle, the belly button and surrounding contour continue to take shape.

Following our post-operative care instructions helps protect the incision while you heal. The amount and location of loose tissue, abdominal muscle condition, prior pregnancy, weight changes, and existing scars can also shape the surgical plan.

Which Tummy Tuck Is Right for Your Anatomy?

Whether the navel needs repositioning largely reflects how much of the abdomen needs correction. A full tummy tuck is more likely to involve the belly button because it treats a larger area, while a mini procedure stays below it. Our body contouring resources can help you compare these options before a consultation.
