Why Do Men Get Liposuction?

Men get liposuction for many different reasons. Often, they want to eliminate stubborn fat that seems resistant to diet and exercise. For those men, liposuction can help them finally enjoy the toned and defined look that they have been working so hard to achieve. Liposuction is also a popular procedure among guys who struggle with excess chest fat. It is frequently used as part of treatment plans for gynecomastia and pseudogynecomastia to reduce enlarged male breasts.

Liposuction can be a better option than more involved surgical procedures. It leaves minimal scarring, requires manageable downtime, and can still offer a notable cosmetic improvement.

Who Are the Best Candidates for Male Liposuction?

Liposuction is appropriate for most men who want to eliminate stubborn excess fat. That said, the best candidates for male liposuction are those with a positive attitude who are in good general health and have realistic expectations for this minimally-invasive body procedure.

Because it is not a weight loss surgery, liposuction may not be appropriate for people who are far from their goal weight. Similarly, because it does not improve skin quality, it may not be the best treatment option for men who are dealing with excess sagging skin or poor skin elasticity.

Liposuction Treatment Areas

Liposuction removes isolated pockets of fat. Most often, these fat deposits do not respond to diet or exercise. As a man, you may be dissatisfied with deposits of fat in some of the following areas:

  • Enlarged male breasts (gynecomastia)
  • Flanks (love handles)
  • Abdomen
  • Hips
  • Thighs

Male liposuction removes pockets of fat in these areas and others so you can achieve the firm, masculine contours you want. If there is a lot of excess, sagging skin in the abdominal area, liposuction may be combined with a tummy tuck. Additionally, we offer CoolSculpting as a non-invasive alternative to liposuction with absolutely no downtime!

Liposuction can be performed with several techniques, all of which break apart fat and then suction it away. Various methods, from ultrasound technology to tumescent fluid, are designed to make the removal of fat cells more efficient and less traumatic to surrounding blood vessels and tissue.

Fat cells are removed permanently with liposuction, although it is possible to regain weight and change the results of liposuction. For the best possible results from liposuction, you should be near your ideal weight.

Liposuction for Men

Although male liposuction is basically performed the same way as it is for women, there are a couple ways liposuction must be modified for a male patient. As a man, your fat deposits may appear in different areas than they would on the female physique.

Perhaps most importantly, as a man, you want results different from what a female patient is interested in. The male contour should be firm. The lines of your profile should be straighter, whereas a woman may want her contours to appear somewhat curvy.

Is Liposuction Treatment Permanent?

An amazing thing about liposuction is that it removes treated fat cells for good. The fat that gets suctioned out during the procedure does not come back or regrow after surgery. For most male liposuction patients, this means that they can enjoy their new look for many years to come.

Keep in mind that some fat cells will remain in the treatment area. Those fat cells can expand with weight gain. And if that happens, it may have a negative impact on your cosmetic results.

What Happens During the Procedure?

Most liposuction procedures follow the same basic steps. First, a small incision is created in the treatment area. Then, a tube called a cannula is used to remove excess fat. Finally, stitches are used to close the incision. Depending on the technique, additional steps may also be involved.

For example, ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty (UAL) uses a special cannula that emits ultrasonic energy to liquefy unwanted fat for easier removal. Meanwhile, during tumescent liposuction, a special solution containing saline is injected into the treatment area before the suctioning of fat.

What To Expect After Male Liposuction Surgery

You should expect to take it easy immediately after your male liposuction procedure. That is because you will not be able to drive or perform various other physical activities right away. Instead, focus on letting your body heal and giving it all the time that it needs to fully recover.

Liposuction has a shorter and less demanding recovery process than many other surgeries. Still, you will need to take several days off from work. You will also need to wear a compression garment for weeks to promote good cosmetic results and help keep any swelling to a minimum.

Our surgeons will make sure you are fully prepared for your recovery. In the meantime, you may find it helpful to review our post-operative and home care instructions for liposuction patients.

What Is the Recovery Time for Male Liposuction?

The initial recovery for male liposuction usually takes several weeks. Most patients are able to walk and climb stairs the day of surgery, return to work within four to seven days, and resume non-strenuous activity after a week. Strenuous activities can often be resumed around three weeks after a liposuction procedure. Keep in mind that your pace may be slightly different.

The full recovery period for male liposuction is longer. You may experience some swelling and mild fluid retention for several months. At that point, you will be able to see your final results.

CoolSculpting® as an alternative to Liposuction?

For some men, CoolSculpting can be an incredibly effective alternative to liposuction. This non-invasive treatment uses gentle cooling energy to freeze and eliminate targeted fat cells. Applied through comfortable applicator paddles, the energy is painless and does not affect or harm the surrounding tissue.

Depending on the areas you are hoping to address with liposuction, CoolSculpting may be able to provide the contoured, defined look you desire. CoolSculpting tends to offer the most significant results for men who are wanting to get rid of stubborn fat pockets and may be a good option if you are looking for a way to avoid an involved surgical procedure. No matter your situation, our CoolSculpting team leads will happily explore this non-surgical alternative with you. In some cases, CoolSculpting may be used after you have healed from surgery to further enhance your results.
