Breast implants will last for many years, but that doesn't mean they have to be permanent. As a woman's wants and needs change over time, she may decide to have her implants removed. The decision is a deeply personal one.
Breast implant removal surgery, also known as breast explant, can be performed by Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery by our board-certified plastic surgeons. Today we'll talk about some reasons for removal.
Breast Implant Removal Without Replacement
Breast implants are not lifetime medical devices. Eventually, they will need to be replaced. Some women will have theirs replaced while others won't.
In the past, you may have wished to have breast implants for cosmetic and aesthetic reasons. But now you've reached a point in your life where you'd prefer a more natural look or a more subtle profile. Whatever your reasons, our surgeons can help you achieve your goals.
Sometimes the removal of your breast implants will leave some sagging skin. You can fix this by replacing the implants, but if you choose not to, you can seek a breast lift to correct it.
Is Breast Implant Removal Common?
Yes! It's more common than you might think. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, in 2020, 36,367 breast augmentation patients had their implants removed in the United States.
Can I Replace My Implants?
Absolutely. You can choose to have your old implants replaced with new ones. In this situation, it's called breast implant exchange. The surgery is often done to upgrade to a better implant as the technology has improved over the years. Shells are more durable and cohesive, and silicone is more natural than before.
Our patients have found that their recovery from breast explant surgery is quicker and less painful than the initial implant surgery. You will be able to move around and shower within 24 hours. But as with any other surgery, follow the instructions of your surgeon and get plenty of rest.
