Stay Informed During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, apart from certain types of skin cancer. An estimated 1 in 8 women will receive a breast cancer diagnosis in America.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month helps to encourage discussion, action, and a sense of community in the face of this disease. This is a time for everyone to come together to share stories of survival, donate time or money, and advocate for breast health.

October serves as a yearly reminder for women to stay informed regarding all aspects of breast cancer. At Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery, believe that it is crucial to raise awareness about the importance of early detection, as well as the breast reconstruction options that are available. Knowledge is power when it comes to the fight against breast cancer.

Become an Advocate for Early Detection

You’ve probably heard this before, but the earlier that cancer is detected, the better. Breast Cancer Awareness Month aims to increase awareness surrounding early detection of the disease.

To help detect breast cancer as early as possible, you can:

  • Learn to recognize the symptoms of breast cancer and visit your doctor if they arise.

  • Ask your doctor about common risk factors, including a family history of breast cancer, to determine if you may have an above-average risk.

  • Get screened for breast cancer and BRCA gene mutations.

  • Consult your doctor about the potential benefits of receiving mammograms when you turn 40.

  • Begin receiving mammograms every two years, starting at age 50.

These recommendations are general guidelines to aid early detection. If you have any concerns, talk to your doctor to discover all of the steps that you should take based on your unique situation.

Know Your Reconstruction Options

In addition to raising awareness about early detection, we believe it is important for cancer survivors to understand all of their surgical options for breast reconstruction.

For breast cancer survivors or women who have undergone a preventative mastectomy, breast reconstruction is a very personal decision. Some women feel that reconstruction helps restore a sense of femininity and normalcy. Other women undergo a lumpectomy or mastectomy with no intention of pursuing reconstructive procedures.

We respect every woman’s choice. However, many women do not know about all of their breast reconstruction options.

Today, women have many advanced options for reconstruction, including:

  • Immediate reconstruction
  • Delayed reconstruction
  • Autologous reconstruction
  • Implant-based reconstruction
  • Fat grafting
  • Nipple reconstruction
  • Areola pigmentation

Our surgeons are skilled in advanced breast cancer reconstruction techniques. They strive to provide every woman with beautiful, natural-looking results.

Please contact our experienced, board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeons to learn more about your breast reconstruction options. Dr. Jeremy Williams and Dr. Christopher Williams will take the time to discuss any questions that you may have in detail to help you feel informed and comfortable.
