What to Expect From Breast Implant Removal Surgery

straight haired girl wearing and touching her white bra 1There are many reasons you might want to remove your breast implants. Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery patients have cited everything from changing aesthetic preferences to a desire to save money on future implant replacements. Whatever your reason for choosing breast implant removal, our board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeons can help. Here’s what you can expect before, during, and after the procedure.

How Should I Prepare for Breast Implant Removal?

Our providers will give you instructions on preparing for your breast implant removal. These typically focus on boosting your immune system and getting your body into the best shape possible for healing.

Before the procedure, you should:

  • Quit smoking and drinking alcohol for at least two weeks.
  • Eat healthy whole foods and drink plenty of water.
  • Ask for time off work to recover (generally a few days to a week for less strenuous jobs).
  • Arrange for a friend or family member to drive you home after the procedure.

Taking good care of your health before your breast implant removal can make the procedure and recovery easier for your body.

How Long Does Breast Implant Removal Surgery Take?

Breast implant removal surgery typically takes about one to three hours. If there aren’t any implant complications, and you only require a simple explant surgery, your procedure could be performed under local anesthesia with oral sedation. However, general anesthesia and IV sedation are used in many breast explant procedures, so you’ll be comfortable and pain-free during surgery.

Breast implant removal is usually an outpatient procedure. After being monitored by our team as you come out of anesthesia, you’ll typically be able to return home the same day. You should have someone close to you drive you home and stay with you to help out for 24 hours after surgery.

How Long Is Recovery From Breast Implant Removal?

Recovery timelines vary, but you should plan to take it easy and avoid activities like overhead lifting or driving for one to two weeks after your breast implant removal. Patients generally have some tenderness for up to six weeks. Oral medications and compression garments can minimize discomfort during recovery.
