What to Expect in the First 24–72 Hours After Surgery

The first few days after surgery are often the most physically noticeable part of your recovery. During this time, it’s normal to experience fatigue, soreness, and swelling as your body begins to heal. You may also notice bruising, tightness, or mild discomfort around the surgical site.

Many patients report feeling groggy or tired, especially if general anesthesia was used. Keeping your upper body elevated (for chest procedures) or legs supported (for body procedures) can reduce swelling and promote better circulation. It’s important to rest, avoid any unnecessary movement, and allow your body to focus on healing.

During this initial phase, follow your post-operative instructions closely. Take prescribed medications as directed, use ice or cold compresses only if advised, and limit activity to light walking unless told otherwise. These steps help reduce the risk of complications and support a smoother recovery.

Activity Restrictions and Safe Movement

While rest is essential, some gentle movement is necessary to support circulation and lower the risk of blood clots. Short walks around your home every few hours, especially after the first day, can help maintain healthy blood flow.

Lifting, straining, and vigorous activity should be avoided entirely during the first phase of healing. This includes household chores, exercise, or lifting children or pets. In most cases, you’ll be advised not to lift anything heavier than 5–10 pounds for the first couple of weeks, but your specific instructions may vary based on your procedure.

Driving is not recommended until you’re no longer taking prescription pain medication and feel comfortable moving freely. If you’re unsure whether it’s safe to resume a particular activity, call our office for clarification.

Signs That Require a Call to Our Office

Some discomfort, swelling, and bruising are expected after surgery, but it’s important to recognize when something isn’t normal. If you experience any of the following symptoms, contact our office at 303-706-1100:

  • Persistent fever over 101°F: A low-grade fever can be common post-op, but a higher or ongoing fever could indicate an infection.
  • Sudden or increased swelling: Especially if it's isolated to one side, or appears rapidly.
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain: These could be signs of a serious complication and require immediate medical attention.
  • Uncontrolled pain: If pain is not relieved with medication or worsens unexpectedly.
  • Excessive bleeding or fluid leaking: Especially if it saturates your dressings or continues beyond expected levels.
  • Redness, warmth, or foul-smelling drainage from incisions: These could signal infection or delayed healing.

When in doubt, it’s always best to reach out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, you’ll need a responsible adult to stay with you for at least the first 24 hours after surgery. This is essential for safety and support as the effects of anesthesia wear off and you begin recovery at home.

Sleep on your back with your upper body slightly elevated if you’ve had breast or chest procedures. After body contouring, keep your legs supported and avoid lying flat or on your stomach. Pillows or a recliner can help you stay in a safe position.

Most patients return to work within seven to 14 days, depending on the type of surgery and the demands of their job. Desk-based roles may allow for an earlier return, while more physical jobs may require additional downtime.

Following your post-operative instructions helps support proper healing and a smoother recovery. Don’t hesitate to reach out to our team at 303-706-1100 if you ever have any questions. We proudly serve Denver, Lone Tree, and nearby areas of Colorado.
