What Happens to Breast Implants as You Age?

Breast implants can stay stable for years even as the breasts around them look and feel different. If sagging becomes the main concern, simply exchanging the implant may not correct it. A breast lift may be considered to remove loose skin and reposition the breast while keeping, replacing, or removing the implant based on your goals.

Older Implants Do Not Need Automatic Replacement

Breast implants are not lifetime devices, but there is no universal expiration date that requires replacement after a set number of years. If your implants remain stable, you have no concerning symptoms, and you are still happy with their appearance, continued monitoring may be appropriate.

Breast revision may be discussed if you develop capsular contracture, rupture, implant displacement, discomfort, visible rippling, thinning tissue, or a result that no longer suits you. A new preference can be just as relevant as a physical problem. Some patients want a different size or implant type years after their original augmentation.

Replacement is only one path. Some patients choose implant exchange, while others prefer breast implant removal. A lift or fat grafting may also be considered when the surrounding tissue has aged or lost volume.
