Gynecomastia is a condition that as many as 60 percent of American men experience. This condition causes enlarged breast tissue, which can lead to the appearance of male breasts. Gynecomastia can be quite embarrassing, and can dramatically impact your self-esteem and confidence. Gynecomastia surgery reduces the size and volume of an overdeveloped male breast.
Factors contributing to gynecomastia include:
- Hormonal imbalance
- Certain medications
- Certain diseases and medical conditions
Before considering gynecomastia surgery, you and your doctor should discuss the possibility of medical treatment for overdeveloped male breasts. You may need to treat the underlying cause, and then decide if gynecomastia reduction is appropriate to achieve your cosmetic goals. Please visit our gynecomastia before and after gallery.
There are two main ways to perform gynecomastia reduction surgery:
Excision – Most often, excess glandular breast tissue needs to be removed. In certain cases where the male breast has become quite large, the excess skin may need to be removed as well.
Liposuction – In some cases, the male breast can be reduced with liposuction alone. When gynecomastia is not severe and there are only excess fatty deposits, liposuction can suction away the extra fat cells.
In certain cases, liposuction and excision may be used together.
