Each type of breast implant offers distinct benefits. Differences Between Saline and Silicone Breast Implants

Both saline and silicone breast implants have an outer shell made of silicone, but they differ in feel and shape due to the different fill material inside the implant.

Saline breast implants are inserted into the breast pocket empty, and filled with sterile salt water solution once they're in place. Saline breast implants are approved for breast augmentation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for women 18 and older.

Silicone breast implants come pre-filled with silicone gel. Many women feel that silicone breast implants look and feel more like natural breast tissue because of the consistency of the gel. The FDA has approved silicone breast implants for women 22 and older.

Both types are approved for breast reconstruction, regardless of age. Both types have similar risks including:

  • Capsular contracture
  • Breast pain
  • Infection
  • Changes in nipple and breast sensation
  • Implant leakage or rupture
  • Necessity of further surgeries
