Reasons for Breast Implant Exchange

For a number of different reasons, many women choose to exchange one or both breast implants at some point after their initial breast augmentation. Sometimes the reason for doing so is cosmetic in nature, to change the appearance of the breasts or other aspects of the augmentation result. In other cases, the breast implant may have become damaged or there may be an undesirable surgical result. Whatever your reasons, our board-certified plastic surgeons can help you decide if a breast implant exchange is right for you.

Although there is not a certain amount of time that breast implants will last, for most patients, implants do have to be removed or exchanged at some point. Breast implants are not necessarily a lifetime medical device. So if wear and tear has led to a breast implant problem, an exchange may be needed.

Common reasons for a breast implant exchange are:

  • Desired change of breast implant size
  • Desired change between saline and silicone implants
  • Implant rippling
  • Implant deflation or rupture
  • Capsular contracture (hardening around the implant)

Breast implant exchange is a relatively common procedure, and the recovery is often easier than the one associated with your original breast augmentation.
