Study published in the Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Journal outlines a patient-based satisfaction survey on 225 patients after breast augmentation surgery.
Breast Augmentation from the patient’s perspective. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons 2012 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report
, there were over 286,000 cases of Breast Augmentation performed in 2012, a 35% increase since 2000, making it the cosmetic procedure most often performed in the United States today. With these statistics, it is important to determine the satisfaction of each patient post-operatively.
Eric Swanson, M.D., of Leawood, Kansas performed a study using 281 of his own patients (consecutively) over a 5-year period. From January 2002 to September 2007, 281 consecutive breast augmentations were performed and then 225 post-operative interviews were performed with patients who attended appointments at least one month after surgery. These interviews included questions in six areas identified for follow-up questions: patient data, indications, recovery, results, complications, and psychological effects.
These interviews dictated the following results: breast augmentation improved self-esteem (91.1%) and quality of life (64.3%). Almost all patients (98.7%) would repeat the surgery. (Plast. Reconstr. Surg. 131:1158, 2013).
