At Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery, we can help you restore a more youthful face by filling in wrinkles and areas of volume loss with the completely non-surgical Juvederm and Botox. Wrinkles are a normal part of aging, but certain environmental factors can influence how your face ages. Sun is a big factor in the appearance of your skin. Years and years of sun exposure can cause brown spots and fine lines. Of course there is also a risk of skin cancer from unprotected sun exposure.

In Denver, time in the sunshine in the summer is typical for most of us. In fact, some amount of sunshine on your bare arms and legs (about 10 minutes a day without sunscreen) can be an important way to boost vitamin D levels. But UV rays tend to be most intense during the summer and too much exposure can be a problem. Here's what you can do to prevent the harmful effects of sun exposure:

1. Wear sunscreen: Sunscreen is one of the most important ways to block UV rays. Choose a broad spectrum type with an SPF of 15 or higher. Apply it about 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure. Remember to reapply every 2 hours, which is especially important at high elevations where sun rays are most intense.

2. Wear protective clothing: Sunscreen does a good job of protecting your skin, but you can block even more UV radiation by wearing a wide-brim hat, which will keep sunlight off your ears, head and face. Long-sleeved UV-rated shirts can also be a good option, especially for hiking, fishing and other outdoor recreation.

3. Stay out of the most intense sunshine: According to the Environmental Protection Agency, damaging UVB radiation is most intense at noon, when the sun's rays have the shortest distance to travel through the earth's atmosphere. Around noon and the hours surrounding, you should stay out of the sun if possible. If convenient, reserve the morning or late afternoon for outdoor activities.

These three measures go a long way in protecting your skin from the damaging and aging effects of UV radiation.
