Rejuvenation...
The skin is composed of many layers
including the epidermis and the dermis
and is made up of nerves, blood vessels,
lymphatic vessels, glands and hair
follicles. There are many functions
to the different components of the
skin.
The outermost layer of the skin is called the epidermis and its main function is to provide protection from external and environmental factors such as UV rays, fluctuating temperatures and even trauma. The epidermis consistently goes through cellular turnover (shedding) every 28 days, however, after the age of 30 this process slows.
The dermis, primarily made up of connective tissue contains capillaries and lymphatic vessels that provide the body nutrients and cleanse the body by carrying clear fluids through the system. Within the connective tissue there are cells called fibroblasts that produce collagen and elastin. Collagen and elastin make the skin soft, supple and firm allowing for a youthful outer appearance of the skin.
As we age the epidermis cellular turnover
decreases and production of collagen
and elastin slows. Our skin begins
to lose its clarity resulting in age
spots, discoloration, wrinkles and
overall firmness. There are several
options available to help tighten,
smooth and rejuvenate the skin including
the Obagi
Blue Peel, Chemical
Peels,
Dermabrasion
and Laser Resurfacing.
