Nipple inversion is a cosmetic problem that affects a small percentage of people, but is nonetheless a point of low-self esteem for many of the people who do experience it. Although it affects mostly women, some men have inverted nipples as well, in which one or both nipples are drawn inward. If you would like to learn about surgical revision of inverted nipples, please call Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery at (720) 457-4471 to schedule a complimentary cosmetic consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons in Lone Tree, CO.

The Cause of Inverted Nipples

Inverted nipples are caused by tension in the tissue surrounding the nipple. The stiff tissue draws the nipple inward. By releasing the tension in the tissue, the plastic surgeons at Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery can restore a more normal nipple appearance. Even if your inverted nipples are not painful or interfering with breastfeeding, you may feel less confident about your appearance because of them. For some women who breastfeed with inverted nipples, an infant may have difficulty latching on to inverted nipples.

The levels of inversion tend to be characterized in the following ways:

  • Level 1: The nipples tend to be inverted, but may protrude in response to stimuli such as cold or touch. Shortly after, they will retract again.
  • Level 2: Nipples are inverted all of the time, but may protrude under strong suction. They retract again quickly.
  • Level 3: Nipples are inverted all of the time and generally do not respond to measures to make them protrude.

During your consultation with Dr. Christopher Williams or Dr. Jeremy Williams, the plastic surgeon can assess the degree of nipple inversion and whether surgery is capable of producing the final result you want. If you are also considering breast augmentation or another surgery to enhance your breasts, inverted nipple revision can often be combined with these other procedures.

Surgery to Correct Inverted Nipples

Inverted nipples can be permanently corrected with a relatively simple procedure at Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery. In years past, surgeons performed this procedure by severing the milk ducts. While this released the indrawn nipples, it also prevented the woman from being able to breastfeed.

A newer technique is much less invasive and more conservative in preserving breast tissue. During the procedure performed by our plastic surgeons, the tight tissue pulling down on the nipple is spread out, so that its tension is released without being destructive. Unlike non-surgical techniques such as suction devices or nipple piercings, the inverted nipple revision procedure provides permanent results and leaves only a tiny scar hidden along the areola.

If you are unhappy with having inverted nipples and would like to learn about your surgical correction options, please call Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery at (720) 457-4471.
