Renewed skin …
The primary purpose of a chemical peel or dermabrasion is to remove skin irregularities. While chemical peels remove fine lines around the mouth and eyes, rejuvenate sun-damaged skin and diminish age spots, dermabrasion smoothes acne scars and irregular traumatic scars making them less visible. Both procedures give the skin a renewed fresher appearance.
What
is used in a
chemical peel?
Different
types of chemical
(peeling) solutions
are available,
but the most common
used now is a fruit
acid derivative
called glycolic
acid. Used in many
cosmetic lines,
a low concentration
is typical, however
our doctors can
use a much higher
concentration of
up to 70%, which
is more effective
in removing the
outer dead skin
layer. Other solutions
used include, TCA
or trichloroacetic
acid used in concentrations
of 25% to 50%,
as well as Phenol,
considered the
historical “gold
standard” by
which other chemical
peels and resurfacing
procedures are
compared.
How
is dermabrasion
performed?
Dermabrasion
is a procedure
performed to remove
the outer layer
of the skin through
an abrasive technique.
The skin is temporarily
frozen, a diamond
wheel is then applied
to the skin, correcting
contour irregularities
related to scaring
from acne or trauma.
How
long is the recovery
period after
a chemical peel
or dermabrasion
treatment?
The
initial recovery
period for either
a glycolic peel,
chemical peel and
dermabrasion can
be close to two
weeks. The stages
the skin will go
through will vary
as the healing
process begins.
Usually within
24 to 48 hours
after the procedure
is performed, moderate
to severe swelling
is resolved and
with proper medication,
the patient’s
pain is controlled.
After seven days
new skin covers
the treated areas
and will typically
remain red for
up to three to
four months.
How
can I maintain
the beauty of
my new skin?
The
new skin unveiled
after the procedure
will be particularly
sensitive to sun
exposure and ultra-violet
light, therefore,
it is imperative
that you protect
your new skin by
applying a sunblock
to all areas that
are treated.
How
do I know which
treatment is
right for me?
Let
your doctor know
what your concerns
are and together
you can determine
what procedure
will give you the
best result, to
fit you and your
lifestyle both
near and long term.

Introduction:
The primary purpose of chemical peels and dermabrasions is to remove irregularities, often due to fine wrinkles or acne scars, in the outer layers of the skin. Chemical peels and dermabrasion can also treat age spots and sun-damaged areas. The type of chemical used depends on the depth of penetration that is needed. The indication for dermabrasion depends on the type of skin irregularity and the location.
