Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia with the physician placing the breast implant either directly behind the breast tissue or underneath the chest wall muscle (pectoral). The method for inserting and positioning the breast implants is based on each individual’s body type and their surgeon’s recommendation. Recovery time is also dependant on each individual, but many patients are up and around within 48 hours of surgery. Breast implants are essentially a silicone shell filled with either silicone gel or saline. Although the silicone gel-filled implants are more durable than the ones used prior to 1992, they are currently available only to women participating in approved studies.
